This edition summarises some of the events that CIGRE Australia has run over the last few months and some coming up.  Our inaugural CIDER conference is almost upon us and we report on the success of the first NGN seminar, CIGRE Tutorials presentation and our 5th SEAPAC.

This edition also reports on the plans of the Australian Panel and Study Committee APB2/SCB2 (Overhead Lines) to look at issues and maintenance of wooden power poles and the outworkings of the recent Symposium in Lund.

Finally, we also highlight the recent update to our board summaries on our website.

A recent international visit to Australia from UK and Norwegian overhead line study group members has reinforced the need for a new working group that will look at the issues and maintenance of wooden power poles.

Swedish Symposium provides HVDC insights

A recent CIGRE symposium entitled “Across Borders – HVDC Systems and Markets Integration” held in Lund, Sweden was sponsored by five of CIGRE’s Study Committees and had more than 300 participants from several countries. A number of Australian representatives also attended. The Symposium provided an ideal opportunity to gain an understanding of the current state of HVDC technology, its potential as a system development aid and associated planning and operational issues from across the world. The event was highly successful and provided a number of insights into the use of HVDC technologies and offered a number of take home learning’s relevant to Australia
