Paris Session 46

CIGRE has recently held its biennial conference in Paris.  This conference provides an opportunity for CIGRE members across the globe to come together and meet to discuss and review progress on work and challenges in the industry.

This year saw some 3290 international delegates and over 4900 visitors through the exhibition centre.

The opening address was presented by Claudio Facchin, President Power Grid’s division, ABB who provided a very relevant and insightful commentary on Big shift in power Shaping power systems of the future.  Claudio’s presentation can be downloaded here.

Among other things, the Paris Session reinforced that  the challenges which a rapid installation of renewables can present is a common global phenomena and we are not alone in experiencing problems in regard to the penetration of wind and solar into traditional large scale networks.

From the opening panel to the Major Disturbance Workshop to the individual Study Committee Sessions, the theme of the challenge of renewables formed a major part of the discussions.

Further reports on the Paris Session will form part of future ITL publications.  However, some notes from two of the presentations have been selected for this edition to illustrate the scope of the discussions.

One presentation covers “Microgrids” (particularly in relation to their potential to improve security) and the other “Management of the Solar Eclipse that affected Europe on March 20, 2015”.  These topics are very relevant to Australia at this time as we continue to grow our renewable generation capacity.   Click here to download the summary of these topics.
