In this edition we bring you three interesting articles – one about system restarts and some of the new challenges we might face in an evolving power system, an article on asset management platforms to facilitate the implementation of your asset management strategies, and feedback on an international forum on synchrophasors, which provide time synchronised real-time measurement of electrical quantities from across the power system.
As this edition is released, over 100 members form our CIGRE Australia community are heading to Paris for the 2024 Paris Session. This will be the largest Paris Session ever held and is sure to provide an incredible amount of information for participants as well as the opportunity to interact with peers from around the world. Our next edition will feature some key takeaways from Paris.
Closer to home, registrations are now open for the Power Electronics and Power System Integration Seminar in Sydney on 29-30 October. The seminar is an industry discussion on existing and emerging challenges associated with the technical aspects of power system performance, modelling, analysis, protection and control, and operation in a changing power system environment and with the evolution of power electronic devices.

The Sunny Day Restoration of a Power System
A ‘sunny day scenario’ has historically been considered a ‘best case scenario’ when analysing and mitigating power system risk. A system black and associate power system restart is already the most challenging situation system operators can face and achieving a prompt successful system restart is increasingly difficult today under a sunny day scenario due to the changing portfolio of generation sources. The following article focusses on the Australian power system.
Business Requirements for Asset Performance Management
A consistent set of requirements for Asset Performance Management (APM) is considered to be important to facilitate selection of the most suitable platform that will meet the specific APM needs of a utility. To this end, Working Group (WG) C1.43 has produced Technical Brochure 910, which provides guidelines for these requirements. This will facilitate the vendor selection processes in deciding which of the offered APM solutions provides the most suitable platform. The Australian members on the WG were L Manli and F Lirios.
Feedback from a leading CIGRE / IEEE forum on the use and benefits of synchrophasors for smart grids
Synchronised phasors (synchrophasors) provide time synchronised real-time measurement of electrical quantities from across the power system. They are increasingly being used in many applications, particularly for situational awareness and control to keep the power system stable and functional in challenging circumstances.
Four Australian representatives attended and presented at a panel session during the 2024 International Conference on Smart Grid Synchronized Measurements & Analytics (SGSMA) from 20-23 May. The representatives were James Guest, Devinda Parera, Filip Ivanovski and David Dart.
