EOI – NGN support for Working Group C5.42
CIGRE SC C5 is currently seeking Expressions of Interest from NGN members to support Working Group C5.42 Market Pricing Issues and Solutions for Low Short-Run Marginal-Cost Systems.
As electricity markets continue to transition towards higher penetrations of renewable and other low-marginal-cost resources, traditional approaches to electricity price formation are facing new challenges. Increasing levels of wind, solar and storage are raising important questions around maintaining efficient price signals, supporting investment, ensuring operational reliability and managing periods of surplus generation.
Working Group C5.42 is investigating market pricing issues and potential solutions in power systems with an increasing share of low short-run marginal-cost generation. The working group is examining practices and policies for near real-time and real-time electricity price formation within balancing and spot markets, with particular consideration of how market arrangements are adapting to increasing penetrations of renewable generation and energy storage.
The technical investigations being undertaken by the working group encompass topics including:
- The current opportunity focuses on:
- Electricity price formation from day-ahead to real-time markets
- Energy, ancillary service, capacity and emissions market arrangements
- Market approaches for managing security, reliability and operational efficiency
- International market practices, utility experiences and emerging industry thinking
- Assessment of future pricing frameworks and potential market design improvements
The working group is now well advanced in the preparation of its Technical Brochure and is seeking to strengthen Australian representation. This opportunity will provide the successful applicant with the ability to contribute Australian market perspectives and practical experience to the remaining stages of the brochure’s development.
Experience within the Australian electricity market will be highly regarded, particularly in areas such as electricity trading, market operations, price formation, dispatch processes, and tie-breaking methodologies during periods of surplus generation.
NGN members with relevant experience, or strong interest in electricity markets and market design, are encouraged to submit an EOI to support the working group through the completion of its activities.
We kindly ask for you to submit your CV and a 1-page cover letter to ngn@cigreaustralia.org.au with the subject line ‘CIGRE C5.42 NGN EOI – [INSERT NAME]’ stating the following:
