Regulatory Framework on Modernization and Extension of Useful Life of Transmission/Distribution
CIGRE Technical Brochure 985, developed by Working Group C5.37, highlights the importance of considering asset life extension, refurbishment, modernisation and replacement within an appropriate regulatory framework. For Australia, this question is becoming particularly important because the future role of an existing asset may be very different from the role for which it was originally designed.
The Australian members of the Working Group were Bilal Qadar and Alaa Jaralla.
Application of 5G Technology to Smart Grids
As the energy sector shifts towards more decentralized and renewable sources, advanced communication technologies are essential. 5G offers significant enhancements in bandwidth, connectivity, and reliability, which are crucial for the efficient operation of modern smart grids. Working Group D2.55 has produced Technical Brochure (TB) 996 which explores the integration of 5G technology within smart grids, highlighting its potential to transform energy distribution and management.
The Australian members of the WG were V Tan and L Shao.
Digital twin technology to assist with asset management
Digital twin technology has emerged as one of the most significant developments in asset management and industrial digitalisation. By combining operational data, engineering knowledge, and analytical models, a digital twin enables organisations to assess asset condition, predict future behaviour, and support informed decision-making throughout an asset’s lifecycle. CIGRE Joint Working Group (JWG) A2/D2.65 has developed a dedicated framework for transformer digital twins and guidance for their implementation across the industry.
The JWG members were Adam Suleiman and Paul Grey.
