2014 Biennial Session

The Paris Session of CIGRE, which ran from 24th to 29th August, successfully brought together more than 3,235 delegates from 85 countries to discuss key power issues affecting companies and countries from around the world.

This is the major gathering for CIGRE, held every two years in Paris and bringing together experts, academics and manufacturers from around the globe to discuss work and issues relevant to the electricity industry.

Terry BOSTON, CEO of PJM, gave the keynote speech at the opening ceremony on Sunday, followed by presentations of the new Honorary Members, recipients of the CIGRE Fellow award and the CIGRE medal.

Phil Southwell of Australia received the distinguished title of Honorary Member (only one of five Australians ever to do so), awarded for exceptional service to CIGRE. more >

The main events in the program were sixteen Discussion Meetings arranged in four parallel sessions each day. At the same time, there were 315 Poster Sessions where delegates could meet with paper authors.

Over 8,500 visitors attended the technical exhibition, during which 240 exhibitors presented their most advanced products and technical solutions, on three floors of the Palais des Congrès.

This Paris Session also provided the opportunity for the 16 Study Committees and most Working Groups to hold meetings, which totalled nearly 200 meetings during the week.

During the Session, CIGRE also released its leaflet summarising the work being carried out by the 16 international Study Committees and their working groups. This leaflet provides detail on the work and references some of the papers and technical brochures that are available to members.

Australia had some 70 technical experts attend the session, as well as 3 scholarship attendees from our Young Engineer Next Generation Group. The work and learnings gained from this attendance are currently being collated and will be presented through our website and future editions of this newsletter.
