John is currently the Executive General Manager Future Grid at Transpower NZ. He has over 30 years’ experience in electricity transmission and distribution in New Zealand. John joined the Board in 2024.
John has recently taken up the Future Grid Executive role, to develop a longer term whole of system transmission plan for New Zealand. His Executive roles over the last 15 years at Transpower include EGM Grid Development and EGM System Operations. As EGM Grid Development, a role he has held twice, he’s been accountable for the evolution of asset management practice, securing regulatory approval of major work programmes and transmission grid upgrades.
As EGM System Operations he has lead the delivery of the market and system operation service provided by Transpower, including implementing a number of initiatives to improve market operation and management of a secure power system.
He has contributed to a number of working groups, to support knowledge sharing, industry reform and research in the electricity sector in both transmission codes and practices as well as market operation.
